This book is an incredible and essential resource for learning about the principles of animation! If you can't purchase a physical copy, I've got the digital version attached to this blog post so you can download it for free! Happy Reading! KJ

As I'm sure many of you know, there is a server on Discord shared by applicants, current animation students, alumni, tutors, and other folks related to the animation program! Joining this group was one of the most significant resources I could access in portfolio season. I loved the lively 24-hour community, and being surrounded by people who understood the portfolio I was going through was terrific. (especially since a gap year can get lonely!). I was always moments away from a phone call with new friends or a funny discussion with my fellow hopefuls to get my mind off portfolio-building stress. For those who would like to know more about (or join) this server, keep reading below!
The server offers a wealth of resources and support, catering to a variety of needs: ● The first few chats are dedicated to introductions, Q&A, rules, resources, general chatting, etc. These are just to welcome you in and show you the ropes. ● Next are the ones dedicated to tutoring services (this is where I found my tutor!) and places to plug your commission info and social media if you wish! ● Lastly, when the requirements come out in October, the moderators open an individual chat blog for each portfolio section. (For example, life drawings can only be posted in the life drawing section.) This way, everything stays organized, and you can keep your content in the relevant place for help. Regardless of your goals or preferences, this chat has a place for you! You can share your work, seek assistance, admire others' creations, offer your help, or simply observe if that's more your style. If you're interested in joining, please don't hesitate to contact me on Instagram (@korrowbot) or via email ([email protected]). I'll be more than happy to extend an invitation to you! I look forward to connecting you to the community! KJ I want to start by thanking everyone who took the time to create any form of documentation of their portfolio process. Each website, YouTube video, and social media post helped me immensely. I have so much gratitude for those who took the time to create content for applicants. It really is a blessing to have a community dedicated to helping each other succeed.
The two wonderfully talented artists I always found myself returning to were Terry Ibele and Sophie Corbett! Both of them created very insightful websites with some great suggestions on how to help yourself make good portfolio pieces. They were the ones who inspired me to create my website because, with their work, I was much more educated about the task I was taking on, and I want to provide that to others. Sophie's website can be found here. She also has a YouTube video with great commentary; I highly recommend studying her portfolio. She has a unique and fun art style, fantastic tips, and documented experiences with her time in art fundamentals + tutoring. Terry's website can be found here. Not only does he have a great website, but he also runs a fantastic podcast called AIP (Animation Industry Podcast), which is all about, you guessed it, the animation industry! During portfolio season, I became a massive fan of Terry's. I cannot get enough of his podcast, humour, and, of course, his fantastic stop-motion work. These days, I'm still listening to his podcast every morning while I work out at the gym- if you still need to check it out, this is your sign! If any of my future classmates/current animation students are reading this and you would like to share resources that helped you during portfolio season- you can comment them onto this post or fill out my form below and I will make a blog post about it on your behalf! Happy Learning! :) KJ |
